It appears that when one uploads Custom Event code to production the source code is not archived on the Backendless system. Do you recommend that people just archive the source in their own BitBucket/GitHub account? Or is there some strategy for using the “Files” service for this purpose?

We do not prescribe any “best practices” for archiving your sources. You’re free to store them in your own source control system, github or Backendless File Storage (which by the way has git integration, see here for details: https://backendless.com/feature-40-enabling-git-support-for-your-backendless-file-storage/).
