Data Model vs Repeater Data - what is what?

I am getting confused about the Data Container and Repeater Data elements in UI Builder.
What is the difference of these methods?

I see that in most samples Data Model and Repeater is checked for the container that is repeated, but there seems to be a difference anyway. Is there a doc page about this?
