A CNAME dns record can be created for any top level domain, not just subdomain. Here are instructions for GoDaddy for instance:

Hi Mark
Maybe I used the incorrect term here, I meant actually prefix not sub domain.

I checked the link and it says

CNAME records use a domain prefix, such as to point to another domain name, or URL.

Even their instructions is about adding prefix cname.

What would be the cname for ?

Thank you

In that case you would need to create a CNAME record for the www part of the domain.
