I read the documentation about having custom domain name pointing to web
However it talks about cname but I understand that cname is used for subdomain such www.sub.domain.com
How can I make my www.domain.com point/load the website contents from web directory

A CNAME dns record can be created for any top level domain, not just subdomain. Here are instructions for GoDaddy for instance: https://www.godaddy.com/help/add-a-cname-record-19236

Maybe I used the incorrect term here, I meant actually prefix not sub domain.
I checked the link and it says
CNAME records use a domain prefix, such as blog.coolexample.com to point to another domain name, or URL.
Even their instructions is about adding prefix cname.
What would be the cname for www.example.com ?

In that case you would need to create a CNAME record for the www part of the domain.
