Hello Backendless Team,

we understand that the Kubernetes community Ingress NGINX controller was officially retired in March 2026 and no longer receives security updates or support.

Could you please confirm whether Backendless currently uses this controller and whether its continued use represents a security risk? If so, are there plans to migrate to a supported alternative?

Thanks for raising this — it’s a fair question, and the retirement caught a lot of teams off guard.

The short answer: Backendless is not affected. Our EU and US clusters do not use the Kubernetes community Ingress NGINX Controller (kubernetes/ingress-nginx), the project that was retired in March 2026. Incoming traffic is handled by external NGINX-based load balancers that route requests into the clusters, so we have no dependency on the retired controller and no migration is required.

Worth noting, since the names are easy to confuse: what was retired is the community Kubernetes controller, not the NGINX web server itself. NGINX remains actively maintained, and we keep our load balancers on supported versions with our regular patching process.

Thank you for the clarification regarding the Backendless EU and US managed clusters.

My question specifically concerns our self-hosted Backendless Pro Community installation, currently running Backendless 8.0.6.2. The Kubernetes deployment installed by Backendless Pro Manager uses the following image:

registry.k8s.io/ingress-nginx/controller:v1.5.1

This appears to be the retired Kubernetes community Ingress NGINX Controller, rather than an external NGINX load balancer.

Could you please clarify whether self-hosted Backendless Pro installations are affected and whether a supported migration or updated ingress controller will be provided for the Community Edition?

Yes, unfortunately, current versions of Backendless Pro Manager are affected.

We do plan to upgrade the Ingress Controller. However, this upgrade is currently planned only for the paid editions of Backendless Pro Manager.

Hello Andriy,

The annual update price of USD 7,200 is difficult to justify for a small company like ours. We use Backendless only for internal applications for a handful of employees and do not generate revenue from these applications.

We would therefore appreciate a more affordable update option for smaller companies with limited internal use.

We are very happy with Backendless and think it is a great platform. We would genuinely like to continue using it and would be happy to pay a price that better reflects the scale of our use.

This is simply a suggestion from a very satisfied Backendless user. We hope there may be a suitable option for smaller businesses in the future.
